Gospel Legend Dottie Rambo Dies In Bus Crash

MOUNT VERNON, Mo. - Joyce "Dottie" Rambo, an influential gospel singer and songwriter, died early Sunday when her tour bus ran off the highway and struck an embankment. She was 74.

Seven other people on the bus were injured in the wreck about two miles east of Mount Vernon on Interstate 44, the Missouri Highway Patrol said. They were hospitalized in Springfield with moderate to severe injuries, according to the patrol.

It was unclear whether the crash was related to the severe storms and tornadoes that hit the region on Saturday. Storms also swept through the area later in the night, according to the National Weather Service.

Rambo, of Nashville, Tenn., was on her way to a Mother's Day performance in Texas, according to her Web site.

"She was a giant in the gospel music industry," said Beckie Simmons, Rambo's agent. "Dolly Parton recorded some of her songs."

Parton sent condolences to "everyone involved in this terrible tragedy."

"I know Dottie is in heaven in the arms of God right now, but our earth angel will surely be missed," Parton said in a statement. "Dottie was a dear friend, a fellow singer, songwriter and entertainer, and as of late my duet singing partner."

Rambo was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame last year and the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame in 2006.

Rambo has had more than 2,500 published songs, including gospel classics such as "He Looked Beyond My Faults and Saw My Need" and the 1982 Gospel Music Association Song of the Year, "We Shall Behold Him."

Youthful Praise Back With CD/DVD Combo

Nashville, TN: The Bridgeport, CT-based choir and charismatic director James “JJ” Hairston along with Youthful Praise, are back at it again with the CD/DVD combo release of “Exalted… Live in Baltimore ” (Evidence/Light Records). Set to release May 13, 2008, the 35 member aggregation recorded their live performance at Baltimore ’s Church of the Redeemed of the Lord. The project is packed with cameos by Judith McAllister, Ted Winn (Ted & Sheri), Jordan Martin, Timiney Figueroa Caton & Steve Lawrence, and Hairston’s mother-in-law, Gloria White, and is guaranteed to have viewers dancing and singing praises.

With 20 years and five albums under their belt it was only natural for YP to finally release their first DVD. Much like the album, there is something on the DVD that will impact everyone. “We try to bring the church service to the listeners and viewers,” says Hairston. So much like a church service, YP fashions their album accordingly: praise and worship which leads to worship ballads in preparation of the word, the message, and closing praise.

All with YP flair there are worship anthems such “He is Exalted/Give You Praise” and “Glory and Honor” featuring Judith Christie McAllister, up-tempo pop-rock tracks, “Everything is Changed” and “You Are” featuring Jordan Martin, congregational tunes such as “Sincerity” and “Jesus Reigns”, street rhythms such as “Freedom” and the rousing modern disco vibe of “Spirit of God.” Consistent with YP’s praise mantra there is the call and response tune, “I Will Give You Praise” (featuring Timiney Figueroa Caton & Steve Lawrence) that stylistically lends a resemblance to “Incredible God, Incredible Praise.” Led by Hairston’s mother-in law, Evangelist Gloria White, “Satisfied” will remind YP enthusiasts of the traditional Pentecostal feet stomping and fast piano playing. To close out the taping is the soulful groove of “Wonderful God” which was written and led by Ted Winn of the Stellar award winning duo, Ted & Sheri.

While YP has stayed true to glorifying God, YP has certainly grown over the last two decades they have been performing together. There sound has matured, there praise has impacted lives, and their experiences have changed their outlook. But even with the changes Hairston exclaims, “We worship, we praise, we dance, and we shout! And we try to present all of that in our music as well.”

“I hope and pray that believers will truly be encouraged to praise God after listening to this record. I want them to believe every word He says without doubt. In a day like today, our faith has to be stronger than ever before,” Hairston shares.

PRAYZEHYMN May Checklist

We have been so busy on this end trying to get PRAYZEHYMNOnline.com where it needs to be - it's ridiculous. But we are definitely making great strides and changes. Changes you will be glad to hear.

New album reviews - of course - are on the way.

PRAYZEHYMN Life finally updated for the months of May and June. The last update at PRAYZEHYMN Life was in February...so we are glad to announce that we finally broke the curse.

The Music Center is refreshed with a brand new update. New music from Norman Hutchins, Alvin Slaughter, CeCe Winans, Ken Reynolds, Brent Jones, Voices of Promise and the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir makes the list.

More articles...you ain't seen nothing yet. Just this month alone, you will see articles including "Hanging Up The Old Robe?" and "Gospel 101: 90's Countdown: The Top 50 Gospel Songs of the 1980s"

The ETC page will get a BIG and MAJOR update. We are turning the page into a resource outlet for friendly links, banners, wallpaper and detailed information on PRAYZEHYMNOnline.com. How cool is that?

But we have some very bad news for the PRAYZE Report...we are going to cease the blog to move on to better things. We're not closing up shop yet at PRAYZEHYMNOnline.com - just dropping posts at the PRAYZE Report. We are not certain when the last date and post will be...but it will be sometime this year. It's hard to say good-bye, but our intentions will be shifting to bigger projects. So keep us in your prayers!

tobyMac, Tomlin and Casting Crowns Big Winners At Doves

The biggest night in universal Christian music is over and the results are in on Wednesday's 39th Annual Dove Awards; which was shown live on the Gospel Music Channel.

tobyMac took home the Artist of the Year award, while Casting Crowns, one of the night's key nominee leaders, collected four trophies out of their six nominations - mostly accredited to group front man and songwriter Mark Hall. tobyMac also racked up awards in the Rock/Contemporary Album and Short-Form Video categories.

Earlier winners on Wednesday were Natalie Grant for female vocalist and Chris Tomlin for male vocalist - their third times winning in their respective categories.

Brandon Heath won new artist of the year - knocking out DeWayne Woods - the big winner at this year's Stellar Awards.

Israel & New Breed won an award for Contemporary Gospel Album for their last album; A Deeper Level.

The Clark Sisters, whom were three-time champions at this year's GRAMMYs, were snubbed out of their three nominations at the Dove Awards. Their live performance of "Blessed And Highly Favored" signaled their presence, but left many surprised as to why they went home empty-handed.

American Idol alumni Chris Sligh, Phil Stacey and Mandisa along with Amy Grant performed on a special tribute to renowned songwriter and CCM legend Michael W. Smith and remained one of the night's biggest highlights.

Meet The Browns' Opens At #2

Tyler Perry's Meet The Browns, featuring Angela Bassett, Rick Fox and gospel singers David & Tamela Mann (of Kirk Franklin fame and from Tyler Perry's plays), opened on Easter weekend at number two - packing in $20 million. The animated family film Dr. Seuess' Horton Hears A Who remained at number one - taking in $5 million more than Perry's film.

The film, an adaption of the Perry's play with the same name, tells the story of a single mother, Brenda, living in an inner city and her struggle to make ends meet raising three children. She, played by Angela Bassett, looses confidence in her life after she is laid off from her job, but later receives a letter from her family in Georgia (a crucial and popular destination for Perry's plays) announcing the death of her family - a man she's never met.

Typically, Perry has kept his fanbase satisfied in his movies and continues to receive support from them with the release of this movie. But critics are not as satisfied with the film.

"The latest product in the inexhaustible auteur's seemingly inexhaustible assembly line of black-themed films, Tyler Perry's "Meet the Browns" is a decided step back after his more sophisticated recent efforts." - Hollywood Reporter

"Bassett looks fantastic, but this isn't her best work, mostly because of a clumsy script that makes her character a contradiction - a pushover when it comes to her abusive ex-husband and then way too steely when dealing with a new romance." - San Francisco Chronicle

"...a holding-pattern movie for a filmmaker whose skills and ambition seemed to be growing, movie by movie, even if the films all fit the same pandering, female-empowerment formula. Whatever progress the man was making, ''Browns'' is a Madea-sized big fat step backward. It's a sloppy, slapdash dramedy based on Perry's play (and video of that play) of the same title." - The Morning Call

"Maybe it's time for Tyler Perry to take a vacation. After all, it's got to be exhausting to preside over an expanding empire of plays, books, DVDs, television, and film, all churned out at a rapid-fire rate. Eventually something's got to give, and the slapdash feel of "Meet the Browns" hints that he might need to give himself a break." - NY Daily News

"There's a nice little movie in Meet the Browns somewhere, the story of a dedicated single mom working to better her life. But it's obscured by way too many distractions." - Arizona Republic

""Meet the Browns" is saddled with the usual quotient of phony snafus and entanglements that are easily untangled. While Bassett is usually an asset to any movie she's in, it's hard to work up much empathy for her character, who doesn't know a knight in shining armor or a fixer-upper dreamhouse when they are staring her square in the face." - Newsday

"When Perry shoehorns in an unexplained, unmotivated and absurd police chase with Madea (the grandmotherly character Perry plays in drag) solely to promote his next film, "Madea Goes to Jail" in September, you can't help but wish he'd hire somebody else to polish his mediocre stage scripts before he films them. And you'd hope that someday he'll care less about his "Tyler Perry" brand, pandering to his base audience and padding his bank account." - Orlando Sentinel

"As long as Perry continues to be more concerned with flaunting his success and popularity as a sign of his abilities rather than developing his muse and talent, he will likely continue to make money hand over fist but also leave behind disposable artifacts such as "Meet the Browns," full of empty platitudes and self-serving righteousness." - Los Angeles Times

And the list of unsatisfied professionals reviewers continue to pour in. Unfortunately, PRAYZEHYMNOnline.com only covers reviews gospel music...for now.

CeCe Returns To Her Church Roots

High expectations are up over the upcoming release of CeCe Winans' eight career solo project, Thy Kingdom Come; set to drop in stores on April 1 on the PureSprings Gospel label.

Produced by award-winning hit-makers Tommy Sims, Luther “Mano” Hanes, Percy Bady, Cedric & Victor Caldwell (along with CeCe’s son Alvin Love III as co-producer) and new comers Christopher Capehart and Brannon Tunie. The fourteen-track disc finds the beloved gospel vocalist performing empowering, congregationally accessible songs of praise, intimate worship and inspiration.

“When you’re in the throne room, your focus is just God,” Winans said. “Nothing’s more powerful than that. When you do other music—positive music, gospel, inspirational, whatever you want to name it—you’re teaching lessons to other people, which is still very important. But nothing’s more powerful than when you’re face to face with God.”

Thy Kingdom Come is the follow-up to 2005’s chart-topping Purified, which showcased the gospel veteran interpreting buoyant, life-affirming songs with a contemporary edge. The album earned the songstress her sixth and seventh GRAMMY® awards in the categories of Best Gospel Performance and Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.

The first single “Waging War” was serviced to radio and went for adds Feb 25. In preparation for the eagerly anticipated album, she also has some upcoming speaking and concert dates which include an April 10 performance in Fort Hood, Texas, as part of the “Salute to Our Heroes” event. Winans will also be appearing on TBN’s Praise the Lord on April 14th, performing new music.

The album is currently available for pre-order purchases in the U.S. at
http://www.cecewinans.com and will be available on iTunes on April 1, 2008.

Obama's Pastor Gets In The Spotlight

All across the country, the pulpit in American churches has been used to preach theological beliefs, historical information and revelation-conscious opinion for decades. It's no longer the place to just read the Word of God, but it's the place where preachers and pastors exalt their own words to something that resembles an act of God. Their words to its listeners become as the red letters in the Four Gospels - pivotal, crucial and essential. That seems to be the case for the fiery sermons of Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright - the popular and beloved pastor of the 10,000 member Trinity United Church of Christ. He has since retired from pastoring the large congregation after thirty-six years of active ministry, but the retirement has gone under silence in the media due to the emergence of what many call "racially-inflammatory and anti-American" messages preached from his pulpit. What makes all of this most important is that, while in a very crucial presidential election year, Wright happens to be the pastor of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama and his messages do not coincide with the "peace-love-and-hope" messages and dialogue of Obama.

Wright's relationship with Obama extends beyond the last few months of the 2008 presidential race. Obama joined Trinity, under Wright's watch, in the 1980s and was later joined in marriage by the pastor. Wright is also accredited by Obama for the title of his best-selling book, "The Audacity of Hope." Once the sermons hit news reports last week focusing on Wright's big endorsements on Obama and even bigger controversial views, Obama denounced them in a press conference and later removed him from his appointment over Obama's African American Religious Leadership Committee. Whether one wants to fully believe or support Wright is one thing, but hearing it in the open is sometimes very tough to digest. To some critics, his statements on racism often point towards black separatism. ABC News aired sermons showing Wright, in the traditional gospel preacher role, accusing the federal government of crimes against people of color, including selling drugs to blacks, creating the HIV virus to infect blacks, and perpetuating racism that led to disproportionate imprisonment of blacks. The media also ran circles around a particular message that Wright preached claiming that "the United States was responsible for the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center and urged black Americans to ask God to "damn America."

Obama didn't derail his pastor when questioned by the media about Wright's statements. Instead he said Rev. Wright "is like an old uncle who says things I don't always agree with," telling a Jewish group that everyone has someone like that in their family."

On the Tuesday episode of ABC's popular daytime talk-dish The View, things got nasty when co-host Elizabeth Hasselbeck confronted the issue - stating that there is an evident contradiction for Obama to announce Don Imus' resignation for racially-graphic tones but quickly defended his pastor in the media.

On the other hand, African Americans are remaining supportive of Obama and Trinity's former pastor. During a Sunday evening service, Pastor Otis Moss III addressed the matter by stating that "it is an indictment on Dr. Wright's ministerial legacy to present his global ministry within a 15- or 30-second sound bite."

In truth, Obama shouldn't be judge because of his pastor's actions and opinions. But it is scary to separate the fact that birds of a feather flock together. In this case, if you want to know your presidential candidate, do your homework. While he is a great speaker, intelligent and highly beloved by many supporters for his "hopeful" agenda, it might be fair to say - after the recent investigation of his pastor - that we probably don't have a clue as to who the real Obama is.

IRS Looks Into Yolanda Adams

GRAMMY award-winning and gospel superstar Yolanda Adams has a big battle on her hands. It's not just the Lord's battle either. This time, it's serious business as the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) launched a probe into Adams' financial records from as far back as 2000. According to the Houston Chronicle, the Houston native failed to keep an appointment ordered by the IRS to explain her financial affairs and to determine Adams' tax liability and how the agency would collect on the debt.

The investigation surrounds the two million-dollar mortgage loan applications filed by the singer, where there were inconsistencies listed in her assets.

A 2005 Ocwen application said Adams earned $40,000 a month and listed $8 million in assets — including an $800,000 trust account, $4.9 million in other personal holdings and jewelry worth $1.5 million. That document said she owned a Lexus and a Hummer.

A subsequent Chase home loan application listed $3 million in assets, including a business worth $1.5 million, a Mercedes-Benz and a Range Rover. She owns a home worth more than $2 million in Houston's Royal Oaks Country Club subdivision.

The agency also wants details about her endorsements and royalties as well as music companies and foundations with whom she is affiliated.

Houston entertainment lawyer and Adams' attorney Ricky Anderson said that he was unaware of the lawsuit and declined to comment until he could look at the IRS filings and reach Adams, who was being featured on a gospel cruise to the Bahamas.

According to sources, she failed to appear with the IRS on Feb. 5 because she decided to appear on her syndicated morning show.

Earlier this year, the agency issued a summons that required Adams, 46, to bring financial documents for the last six years to Houston's IRS office in February and answer questions. When Adams missed her appointment, the government asked the court to force the entertainer to cooperate. She is scheduled to appear in court next month.

Let's hope she doesn't do a Bobby Brown by dodging the heat. The morning show can wait.

This One Is For You...

Oh, What a night it was for Sen. Hillary Clinton.

The exit polls earlier last week sighted that Democratic challenger Sen. Barack Obama had a slight edge over Clinton; pushing fear into the air and into her campaign. But as she has proven before, exit polls have no power over the end result. And the final numbers proved that polls aren't always what they are hyped up to be. Clinton comfortably took Ohio on Tuesday night with 55% of the vote going to her, 43% for Obama. She also won the favor of Rhode Island. She even picked up the win in the delegate-rich Texas with 51% going to her. Earlier that day, it was too close to call for either Democrat nominee, but towards the end with 95% of the precincts being counted up Clinton surged ahead as the victor. Obama's only win of the night was in Vermont; surging ahead with 60% of the voters.

It was mandatory that Clinton needed to win two of the key states in Tuesday's primary to stay in the game. These victories for her keeps her in the race for the Democratic nomination and brings more tension in weeks to come as the Pennsylvania's primary nears.

The Associated Press praised Clinton on her courage and her ability to stand against the storm saying that "Clinton is a realist and most observers — even those sympathetic to her quest — said she would be loath to wage a fruitless battle if the results are anything less than a decisive game-changer that stops Obama's momentum."

Obama still leads in the delegate count, and has even convinced some of the "super-delegates" to cross over to Obama-mania, including longtime Clinton friend and civil rights icon Georgia Rep. John Lewis. Lewis' decision to switch to Obama made serious attention, especially after his decision was mostly accredited to what he considers to be the "people's candidate." During this time period, mega superstars got into Obama's corner to fuel his campaign with dollars, support and impressive endorsements. But Clinton shows no signs of stopping as she declared in Columbus, Ohio as if the walls of Jericho had fell in this heated race for the White House. "The nation is coming back and so is this campaign," she uttered with great joy. "For everyone here in Ohio and across America who's been ever been counted out but refused to be knocked out, for everyone who has stumbled but stood right back up, and for everyone who works hard and never gives up -- this one is for you," Clinton said before an excited and enthusiastic audience.

As for the Republican contest, let's call it a done deal. John McCain sealed the deal with his GOP nomination; reaching beyond the 1,100 mark. Mike Hucakbee, his only challenger, dropped out of the Republican race after the results came in. "It's now important that we turn our attention not to what could have been or what we wanted to have been, but now what must be -- and that is a united party," Huckabee told a crowd in Dallas.

Raising PRAYZE, My Tribute Plugs

Okay PRAYZEHYMN Family and Visitors. We are at a very crucial time in our campaign for excellence in gospel music. We are aiming to raise $1,500 for our RAISING PRAYZE Fundraising Campaign this year - to help offset the financial turbulence of the website, hosting, our very first 24-7 online radio station and other fees. It costs a good penny each month and usually it comes out of a brother's pocket. Call it a labor of love. But with your help, we can make this a communal effort and to help keep the website moving forward.

The official deadline for the RAISING PRAYZE Fundraising Campaign is April 25, 2008. And we have a LONG way to go. We receive traffic figures daily to the site; totalling an average of 500 hits a day. Imagine if each visitor contributes $5 bucks, we can truly make a difference.

So help in this worthy cause and help keep PRAYZEHYMNOnline.com moving in the right direction. Consider donating today.

For more information on RAISING PRAYZE,

Even though Black History Month 2008 has quickly left us, we felt it was befitting to ask a number of gospel artists including Tyscot Records' VaShawn Mitchell, Integrity Music's Ken Reynolds and JJ Hairston of Youthful Praise who are their musical heroes. We were moved in their contributions and felt like sharing their wealth of knowledge to the public. Entitled MY TRIBUTE, this ended up becoming an excellent way to pay respects to those that laid down the foundation for today's generation of gospel artists. GMA Gets Diversified

After looking at the GMA’s sheet of nominees for the 39th Annual GMA Dove Awards, you might start thinking the organization decided to cover both Christian and gospel talent in the big categories. Probably the most interesting and diverse list of nominations in the premier awards’ history, the Dove Awards were able to open up the floodgates for upcoming talent as diverse as American Idol contestant Mandisa, Marvin Sapp, Group 1 Crew, the Clark Sisters and gospel newcomer DeWayne Woods. CCM favorites Casting Crowns, along with group songwriter Mark Hall, led the list with six nominations in total, while tobMac, renowned worship leader Chris Tomlin and the David Crowder Band tied - receiving five nods. The Clark Sisters, who are now three-time GRAMMY recipients, received four nominations which include Group of the Year and Artist of the Year.

"Gospel and Christian music artists share an expressed intent to honor God through music and the freedom to create their art without stylistic boundaries," said Gospel Music Association President and CEO John W. Styll. "This year's Dove nominations are a testament to that."

A big reason why diversity is being celebrated in this year’s Dove Awards with the main categories opening up to seven slots instead of the traditional five, according to Styll, cites the difficulty "in the past for the artist categories to fairly represent and celebrate the breadth and depth of our music's diversity."

The award show will air live on the Gospel Music Channel from Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry on April 23 at 8 p.m. Amazingly, there will be no scheduled host for the event. But expect a good show still - performers and presenters will definitely be there to make the event a special one to remember.

50th GRAMMY Awards: Recap

No wonder they call it the biggest night in music.

The show was filled with major highlights, topped with Amy Winehouse's via satellite performance and a blazing duet with pop/R&B legend Tina Turner and Beyonce', stunned its viewers with uncanny performances, moving tributes to music legends and even a few uncomfortable moments from the unpredictable Kanye West. West's moving performance of "Stronger" set to galactic, glow-in-the-dark imagery and graphics set the bar high for the night's performances, even though the Foo Fighters stole the cake with their "classical-meets-rock" outdoor performance with the GRAMMY Philharmonic Orchestra lending magical background support. But West's moving nods to his late mother gripped listeners hearts...and even became a big deal when he picked up the award for Best Rap album. The music begin to play when he was closing his speech with words of appreciation to his mother. And discomfort rung through the air: "It would be in good taste to stop the music," West said — and the music stopped.

"I know you're really proud of me right now and I know you want me to be the No. 1 artist in the world and Mama," West continued, "all I'm going to do is keep making you proud. We run this."

West's ego got the best of him at that moment, but was brought down several times throughout the program; becoming the bunt of most jokes. Usher even took a jab at the reigning rap star by saying, after announcing the nominees for Album of the Year, "See, they all are winners here, Kanye." West was also nominated in that category, but didn't win.

But the performances clearly marked the fifty year celebration of the GRAMMYs as one of the best in modern award show history. Alicia Keys tore the house down with a rousing performance of her recent hit and GRAMMY winner for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance, "No One." Josh Groban and Andrea Bocelli, with their immensely gifted tenor vocals, paid tribute to the late Luciano Pavarotti singing "The Prayer." The Time - united with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis - also dazzled the audience with their Prince-styled rendition of "Jungle Love" - reminding us of the good times of the '80s. A serious footnote of the evening was Tina Turner's big duet with Beyonce' running through "What's Love Got To Do With It" and "Proud Mary" (surely an ode to the late Ike Turner). John Fogerty also hit the stage with a rock-and-roll tribute that also featured living legends Little Richard (ultimately proving he's still got it) and Jerry Lee Lewis both running through songs like "Good Golly Miss Molly" and "Great Balls of Fire." And the remarkable and mind-blowing merges of classical icon Itzhak Perlman, Lang Lang and Herbie Hancock gave a performance of a lifetime on George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue"; ultimately sending the audience up on their feet at the end.

And in GRAMMY tradition, the night couldn't end without an inspirational revival fired up with the spark and charisma of gospel music. This year's appearances featured the GRAMMY MusiCares recipient Aretha Franklin and BeBe Winans singing together on "Never Gonna Break My Faith" (which also picked up an award this year from the Bobby movie soundtrack) and later evolved around big-sounding brass and funk from the Clark Sisters on "You Brought The Sunshine." Trin-i-tee 5:7 peeked out for a second and then Israel & New Breed makes their grand entrance with their hit "With Long Life"; capturing the magic of the big Santana performance a couple of years back. The Queen of Soul returns with the full crew to close the medley with the legendary "Old Landmark" - sending the entire audience into a Holy Ghost frenzy.

While Amy Winehouse received four awards, she didn't win for Best Album. Herbie Hancock, surprisingly, won the coveted award for his amazing project River: The Joni Letters. "You know it's been 43 years since the first and only time that a jazz artist got the album of the year award," Hancock said, then proceeded to honor "the giants upon whose shoulders I stand, some of whom like Miles Davis, John Coltrane ... unquestionably deserved the award in the past. But this is a new day, that proves that the impossible can be made possible." The entire audience rose to their feet to acknowledge the Academy's choice and realized that this was a moment that surely made history - giving that the album was up against big albums from Foo Fighters, Vince Gill, Amy Winehouse and Kanye West.

Chaka Khan also was a big winner for her deliciously-styled funk/R&B record Funk This - taking home victories for Best R&B Performance By A Duo or Group (Disrespectful) and Best R&B Album.

The Clark Sisters, whom entered into this year's race with three nominations in all - took home all three awards for Best Traditional Gospel Album and Best Gospel Performance. An amazing tie between Aretha Franklin and the Clark Sisters was called for their singles - "Never Gonna Break My Faith" and "Blessed and Highly Favored." Their last project may have been called "Live - One Last Time," but after these victories , these gospel legends might have to go a couple more rounds.

The Very Rugged Cross At Mt. Calvary

After reading this, people might start calling this blog nothing less than a gossip resource. But don't get mad at me...I'm not making the headlines. I just report the headlines.

Today's news just got troublesome for one of the biggest mega-churches in the Washington, D.C. area - Greater Mt. Calvary Holy Church - headed by Bishop Alfred Owens, Jr. and the highly-charismatic and popular preacher Co-Pastor Susie Owens. And it's all because of a female choir member who probably hungers to be the next Wendy Williams. In an e-mail sent out to the pastor in December and January, the undisclosed choir member decided to out more than 100 church members and staff of a number of the church's choirs; accusing them to be homosexuals. The names were mostly male choir members.

In one of her emails, she states that she "will be leaving the choir at the top of the year because eighty percent of the tenors are homosexual and act more like a female in choir rehearsal than I do." She released a second email on Jan 2, after her first email identified 45 church members as gay, releasing another 62 church members - with both first and last names attached.

Precautionary actions within the church have been made - coming from Owens - as he met with all of the members mentioned in the first e-mail. According to a Washington Blade article - a popular DC gay newspaper, an unidentified male forwarded the email to them and also acknowledged that Owens "wanted to help people who wanted help to not be gay and that he was willing to help anybody change from being gay." Gay activists are appalled by the emails and are pursuing to make headlines with this story.

By the way, this is not the first time Greater Mount Calvary has made news headlines. In April 2006, homophobic remarks were made By Bishop Alfred Owens, using the words "faggot" and "sissy", during his Palm Sunday sermon.

You all don't want to hear my "two cents" on this matter. So I will conclude the article with these wise words: "If you have such a problem with homosexuals being in your church, why did you let them in your membership." And to the concerned choir member with the Wendy Williams spirit: "Was that an act of holiness? If you don't like where you are, go another direction. If you don't like a business, just stop going to it. That's what I believe.

And don't yall email me for the original copy of the emails. That's just down right messy!

Motown Under Fire Again

Gosh, just when you thought Motown couldn't get any more bad press.

Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, whom was a visible presenter at last year's Stellar Awards and is known for being dubbed as the Hip-Hop Mayor, appeared beside his wife on a video that was heard all across the world asking for the public's forgiveness. The video is pretty sketchy when analyzing it from beginning to end because it never goes into details on what he's apologetic for. His words are as follows: "I am the mayor. I made a mistake. I truly apologize to you. I am accountable."

Sounds like a 9-year old picking up his first Balloons and Bears books for the first time. But the Detroit mayor is addressing concerns about an alleged steamy love affair from his former aide, Christine Beatty. A prosecutor is now investigating if he lied under oath regarding the affair last summer in which both denied having a physical relationship. Because of legal matters, Kilpatrick was not allowed to discuss any serious details about the case or situation on air. A conviction from lying under oath can lead to a maximum of fifteen years in prison.

The dirty laundry of the entire situation surrounds the biggest blooper of them all: the steamy, flirty and even sexually explicit dialogue found in their text messages - all recorded on Kilpatrick's work cell phone. The only words the mayor's wife, Carlita, released regarding her husband's turmoil were that she "is angry, hur and disappointed, but no question I love my husband."

The speech was recorded and aired from his church home, Greater Emmanuel Institutional COGIC. Church name sounds familiar? Of course it does...it's the church where J. Drew Sheard is the pastor and gospel singer Karen Clark-Sheard is the first lady. Seems like the Sheard family got another thorn to pick from their flesh. Our prayers go out to the good folk of Detroit.

He has not stepped down from his mayoral position; returning back to work after the apology. According to the Battle Creek Enquirer, he has resigned from the Florida A&M University foundation board, school officials said.

Another Choir Bites The Dust

Okay...while the PRAYZEHYMN Message board lights up with all of the free advertisements and soliciting a brotha can handle from Dexter Walker and his Chicago-based community choir, Zion Movement, I felt like bloggin' my thoughts on this side of heaven - at the PRAYZE Report. And definitely feel it's necessary.

I find it so strange after I reviewed his YouTube music video of '>Hezekiah Walker's "Lift Him Up" on the recently posted commentary on PRAYZEHYMNOnline.com (The Spirit of Rebellion) and speaking out against the radical and rebellious nature of the entire rendition, a link of the video is posted up during a Walter Hawkins/Favorite Tune topic. Now when did Walter Hawkins ever pen "Lift Him Up" or ever cover that particular song? Well, let's just say that it had to have been posted after some Zion Movement supporters decided to "move" with a plug for the video since I publicly announced my unfavorable opinion of the video. A deliberate move to try to prove Mr. J Matt wrong.

I have always considered Dexter Walker an opportunist. Not to say he's a bad person, I just think - my opinion here - he's just stuck like glue to his own ministry and what he does. Don't believe me: join the board and check out every single time Walker has posted and witness how many times it's been about him and his ministry. I think everyone should have a good outlook on what they do...but when a person makes decisions that, in the end, come off as being arrogant, standoffish, self-absorbed...and they are always in defense-mood by trying to glamorize something that isn't quite acceptable to the mass public, that's when they need to take a step back and reevaluate their own selves.

Personally, I'm tired of all of the ZM chatter, especially when I couldn't find but one or two okay songs on the project. And I'm not the only one that will go on the record to profess that.

Go ahead and be mad at me...watch the video for yourself. And if you like crazy antics, fake-looking flamboyant praise breaks and busy musicians playing all over one another like it's a reality-TV talent contest, then be my quest. I can't help it I listen to good music and am proud to say that. For those whom are publicly patting artists on the back and joining their fan clubs, make sure you are not doing it on purpose but with a spirit of confidence.

Campaign MLK

On MLK Day, observed by millions of Americans on January 21, we pause to reflect on the legacy and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Seems like it's also a day of campaigning for everything that MLK fought for the heart of equality, the end of segregation, economic and political empowerment and anti-war progress.

As the presidential caucuses and primaries continue and as the country fearfully awaits the arrival of Super Tuesday, the Democratic party leaders (Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards) prepared their speeches to deliver at several of the country's memorial services in honor of the great civil rights leader. On Sunday, Barack Obama's speech at Ebenezer Baptist in Atlanta almost sounded like a sermon as listeners awaited to hear his commentary and promises for the country's future through his potential administration. But listeners were also awaiting to hear what new comments he had for former president Bill Clinton. The media has been on a uprising trying to smite the two leaders in a war of words ever since Bill Clinton labeled his promises for the future a "fairy tale." Obama decided to counterattack Clinton while trying to do bring down his current competition for the Democratic nomination, Sen. Hilary Clinton. After a victory in both Nevada and New Hampshire, Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton are considered by most critics and news outlets to be in a very close match for victory.

It seems like Sen. Hillary Clinton has experienced a war of words from all sides of the spectrum. For being a woman and the only woman running for office and for being married to former president, Clinton is experiencing from most of her opposition a great deal of discomfort. Stll, she rises up to the challenge and proves her experience is as mightier than most realize. On Sunday, Sen. Clinton attended an observance for MLK Day at the esteemed Abyssinian Baptist Church of Harlem, pastored by Reverend Calvin O. Butts, III. A mix of boos from Obama fans and cheers from the crowd awaited her during her visit. A small but boisterous crowd declared that Clinton was there to steal the black vote, as the pastor of the mega-church announced his endorsement to Clinton. According to most polls, the Democratic party in the eyes of most black Americans sees the "Clinton vs. Obama" situation as a war on race...an issue of black vs. white.

According to Letta Tayler of Newsday.com, hecklers continued to repeat "Harlem for Obama", briefly drowning out Butts' endorsement. When Clinton passed cups of steaming coffee to the crowd on the bitterly cold day, one Obama fan shouted, "I don't want your coffee!" "HIL-lary! HIL-lary!" Clinton supporters shouted back.

Outside the church, Butts, who also is president of SUNY at Old Westbury, said his endorsement of Clinton had prompted angry phone calls from some parishioners. But, he added, "a vote for Hillary is not a vote against Barack Obama or any community, be it African-American, Latino or any other." Instead, he said, it is a vote for the candidate "who has the vision and experience to make things happen."

On MLK Day, a debate featuring the Democratic candidates and things just got ugly between Obama (whom made an announcement earlier that we should unite) and Clinton. Edwards put a little humor into the situation when he acknowledged that there were three people in the debate, not two.

The highlighted moment of the evening surrounded Obama's defense about recent comments he made about Republican ideas and Ronald Reagan. During his comments, Clinton interrupted and said she has never criticized Obama's remarks on Reagan. Obama, slyly responded, "Your husband did." She snapped back, "I'm here. He's not."

The debate, sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus Institute and CNN, took had a change of direction later on as Clinton and Edwards questioned Obama's present votes for legislation laws that would have have downfall effects and possibly bring about legal concerns. Still, a great number of African-Americans during the debate hoorayed for Obama; showing him support possibly because of Obama's skin color.

South Carolina, a state Obama ventured through last year with a gospel tour featuring Donnie McClurkin and Mary Mary, holds their primary on Saturday, Jan. 26.

As MLK Day comes to a close in 2008, we must remember that our right to vote is essentially important...not just to our race, but for the good of mankind. Let's vote for the best candidate involved...and not just because of a person's skin color, but let's vote for the best and most experienced person for the job. In the end, it's performance that is going to get us out of this mess we are in as a country.

Why Did I Take Steroids?

Maybe this should be the new film title for super black cinema producer Tyler Perry, whom soared to stardom with his best-selling Madea plays. The actor and director along with an A-list of celebrities including Mary J. Blige, Wyclef Jean, Timbaland and 50 Cent were named in connection with an Albany, NY-based steroid investigation that alleges the celebs took performance-enhancing drugs.

None of the celebrities was accused of violating the law. Instead, the investigation has focused on stopping the flow of the drugs by cracking down on doctors who illegally prescribe them without seeing patients, and on the so-called anti-aging clinics, pharmacies and other distributors that supply the drugs.

While Mary J. Blige's reps commented on the report and claims she has never taken any illegal steroids, reps from the other stars' cabinets have not yet commented.

Let's just hope Madea ain't taking these drugs to enhance that supersized chest of hers anymore.

Another Stellar Sweep Goes Wrong

Okay, I'm not a hater so don't get things twisted...but the Stellars seem to love honoring those that fit well in the popular category, because the Voting Committee of these awards are now only focusing on their T-Mobile 5 Favs instead of focusing on the big picture.

The announcement of Saturday's 23rd Annual Stellar Award results are finally out (sorry, didn't attend) and to my surprise, as usual, the bulk of the awards ended up going to the good ol' buddies of the industry. Donald Lawrence has taken home in a three year radius almost every award since the release of 2004's I Speak Life. Now he's being honored for two projects he's affiliated with: newcomer DeWayne Woods "Introducing DeWayne Woods & When Singers Meet" and the final chapter of the Clark Sisters "Live: One Last Time." Both albums, produced by D. Lawrence, stole the show and apparently stole the awards from the other nominees. Call it the ultimate black ghetto award fiasco gone wrong again. Why I call it a fiasco? Because even the big critics, such as myself, know that both of these albums lacked substance, strong material, and an evenness that great albums should possess - and better suited projects that were nominated failed to get the big endorsement from the voting squad of the Stellar Awards.

Check this out and tell me if this doesn't make sense.
Artist of the Year - Clark Sisters
Song of the Year - Let Go, Let God by DeWayne Woods
Male Vocalist of the Year - DeWayne Woods
Producer of the Year - Donald Lawrence
Group or Duo of the Year - Clark Sisters
New Artist of the Year - DeWayne Woods
CD of the Year - Live - One Last Time by the Clark Sisters
Traditional Group of the Year - Clark Sisters
Urban Inspirational Single/Performance of the Year - Let Go, Let God by DeWayne Woods

Almost look like the credits to a YouTube Do-It-Yourself-music video.

Don Johnson - you oughta be ashamed of yourself for hiring and soliciting a narrow-minded team of inexperienced voters to come up with this year's wins. Use some common sense here. Dreamgirls, the motion picture, was a great film and deserved at least one or two Oscars, but it didn't deserve a sweep...and it didn't. Sweeps usually take place when there's nothing else good in place. Personally if I were a Stellar nominee, I would have wanted a refund and probably would have wanted to call my lawyer - demanding to sue the entire event - for stealing my time.

What makes this situation even more frustrating is knowing that both projects were marinated by the gospel industry with circumstantial hype and overdone "reality-TV" glitz that most of the other albums couldn't compete. In the end, it really looks like the other candidates - even if they had perfect albums and performances - couldn't stand in the ring with the Clark Sisters' heartbreaking final album as a group and the buzz surrounding DeWayne Woods' popular search-engine bio announcing his deliverance from HIV. But when did music award shows become humanitarian awards?

Honestly, there's too many friendships and buddy systems in place at the Stellars. Thank God for real award shows like the GRAMMYs. At least they cover the entire spectrum of each genre and try to deliver a more eclectic and reasonable response to their voting process.

And I don't care who hates me after I post this - because I don't hate anyone. I just believe fair is fair. When I think of Best Album of the Year...I don't think my best friend should win it because I hung out with them at the mall last weekend and I took a picture with them at last year's church convocation. But I must get over this setback in gospel music history...I always thought R&B was my true calling.
